4 Reasons Biodegradable Plastics Are Beneficial

Biodegradable plastics are made from natural plant-based raw materials that enable natural decomposition. Bacteria and fungi in the surrounding environment metabolise the plastics, breaking down their structure. Created to address the plastic waste problem, they turn to compost after a certain period.

1. Saves non-renewable energy. Biodegradable plastics help conserve petroleum supplies. Traditional plastics come from heating and treating oil molecules into polymers; bioplastics come from natural sources like corn and switch grass.

2. Reduces carbon emission. A significant reduction in carbon emissions occurs during manufacturing, and because the materials are plant-based, minimal carbon is emitted during composting.

3. Consumes less energy. The manufacturing process requires less energy and no fossil fuels for recycling — lowering pollution and environmental impact.

4. Provides an eco-friendly solution. Proper composting or recycling reduces waste that would otherwise go to landfill. With the increased use of bioplastics, we can expect a greener, more sustainable future.
